Caring
for your Tahitian Pearls
Tahitian
pearls, because of their nature, need special care and
should not be mixed with other gems unless stored in a jewelry
pouch. Your black pearl is a soft gem and can be easily damaged
if not handled correctly or exposed to heat and chemicals.
The following guidelines should help maintain the beauty and
luster of your tahitian black pearl.
- Do not use jewelry cleaners, unless
specifically labeled as safe for pearls.
- Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner.
- Do not steam clean pearls.
- Do not expose/use detergents, bleaches,
Windex type cleaners, or abrasive cleaners on pearls.
- Do not use abrasive materials to clean
pearls such as toothbrushes and scouring pads.
- Do not hang strings of pearls to dry.
- Avoid wearing pearls with rough fabrics.
- Do not wear pearls while applying hair
spray, cosmetics, perfume or when swimming or showering.
Cleaning
Your tahitian pearls should be wiped
with a clean soft cloth, either dry or damp, after every
use. Doing so will help prevent dirt and perspiration
from accumulating. Perspiration is slightly acidic
and with prolonged exposure could eat away at the black
pearl.
If your pearls are dirty they can be
cleaned your jeweler or with a jewelry cleaner that is specifically
formulated to be safe for pearls. Remember to not
use regular jewlery cleaners as they will harm your pearls.
After cleaning is complete, just lay
your pearls flat inside a damp towel to dry. Once
the towel is dry, your pearls should also be dry.
It is always a good idea to have your
jeweler inspect your pearls periodically to ensure secure
mountings and that strings are still in good condition.
